About Us, The Ramakrishna Movement

Atmano Mokshartham Jagaddhitaya Ca

Guided thus, when a spiritual aspirant voluntarily embraces and participates in the sufferings of others in a selfless spirit, his bad karma gets purged out – he becomes pure in due course and received Divine grace. This service is done as Sadhana with humility. ‘This attitude at once removes all the distinction between the Sacred and the secular. Work is worship. Life itself is religion.’ This is the guiding factor behind all activities of the Movement. This feature distinguishes it from other service organizations. The welfare of the society or service is not the end in itself. Rather, they are the means to spiritual perfection of the person serving with right attitude.

The brilliant interpretation of Sanatana Dharma by Sri Ramakrishna and its practical application in the lives of His apostles and followers, easily liberate and expand our minds. The underlying truths of all faiths having been demonstrated by Sri Ramakrishna, instills in the ordinary mind reverence for all religions. This unifying spirit is conspicuous in all the expressions of the Movement.

The Ramakrishna Movement
The several Vedanta societies abroad, Ramakrishna Math and Mission, Sarada Math and Mission, the large number of private centres, innumerable devotees and institutions rendering service carrying the names of the holy trinity, constitute broadly the Ramakrishna Movement. Being non-sectarian in character, anyone irrespective of caste, creed, gender or nationality, ready to work for its ideals can become a member.

Emblem
The emblem of Ramakrishna Math and Mission was designed by Swami Vivekananda. The wavy waters, the blossomed lotus and the rising sun symbolize respectively, Karma (work), Bhakti (devotion) and Jnana (knowledge): the encircling serpent represents Yoga (the path of meditation) and the awakening of the Kundalini (the spiritual power latent in every individual). The swan represents Paramatman (The supreme self). The emblem thus signifies that there are various paths to the realization of God and spiritual seekers may follow any one or more of these paths according to their temperament and inclination for their spiritual realization.

In the Ramakrishna Mission,

The sick are worshipped with medicines
The illiterate with education
The hungry with food
The indigent with material support
The spiritual aspirant with opportunity to serve and
All are worshipped with spirituality

Om Peace Peace Peace
